LEDs that stay cool

A panda night light turns your child's bedroom into a cosy, reassuring space, with its cuddly shape and a soft light designed not to disturb sleep. This little glowing companion is there for bedtime, night-time wake-ups and the first nights sleeping without mum and dad in the room, right from the early months.
The panda is one of children's favourite animals: its contrasting black and white colouring is exactly what newborns see best during their first 3 months, while their vision is still developing. A panda-shaped night light therefore becomes a familiar visual landmark, there in the bedroom every day.
Its rounded shape and gentle features create a soothing presence, whereas an ordinary lamp remains a purely practical object. This emotional appeal explains why it's so popular in children's bedrooms and as a new baby gift.
The main styles of panda night light you'll find in our animal night lights collection:
Before choosing a model, it's worth comparing the technical specifications. A baby night light isn't just a decorative object: it needs to stay within specific brightness and colour temperature limits to protect the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone.
| Feature | Recommended value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Colour temperature | 2,700 to 3,000 K | Warm light that doesn't interfere with melatonin |
| Brightness | 5 to 30 lumens | Enough to reassure without waking |
| Battery life | 8 to 12 hours on average | Lasts a whole night without recharging |
| Power | USB-C 5 V or AAA batteries | Can be moved anywhere in the room |
| LED lifespan | 25,000 to 50,000 hours | Several years of daily use |
| Height | 10 to 20 cm | Right size for a bedside table or shelf |
A light brighter than 50 lux at the level of your child's face can delay sleep by 20 to 30 minutes, according to observations commonly reported in paediatric sleep medicine. Most models in our range deliberately stay below this threshold, often with 3 adjustable brightness levels so you can adapt the light to each stage of the night.
USB-C rechargeable models have replaced older battery-powered versions in the vast majority of new designs. A full charge usually takes 2 to 3 hours and then lasts a whole night, or even two to three nights depending on the brightness used.
Being cordless during use has two practical advantages: no risk of getting tangled in a cable, and you can take the night light anywhere, from the living room to your own bed, and even for nights at the grandparents'.
Some models include a music function with pre-recorded lullabies, white noise or nature sounds. The volume is usually capped at around 60 decibels, about the level of a calm conversation, to protect your baby's hearing. The sound switches off automatically after 15 to 30 minutes so it doesn't disturb deep sleep cycles.
Beyond its looks, a panda baby night light meets several practical needs that appear in the first months and change as your child grows.
A light-up panda also makes a lovely new baby or birthday gift: it lasts for years and grows with your child, unlike many toys that are quickly forgotten. If you can't decide between different animals, our kids' night lights selection brings together every model available, from newborns up to around 8 years old.
All night lights intended for young children must comply with the European EN 71 toy safety standard. For silicone models, check for a "BPA-free" label: this compound is banned in many baby products, but can still turn up in some cheap imports.
As for heat, the low-energy LEDs used in these night lights reach around 30 to 35 °C on the surface after several hours of use, well below the 50 °C threshold considered a burn risk for a child's skin. Children can therefore safely handle certified models themselves.
The right model mainly depends on your child's age and how they will interact with their night light. A newborn doesn't have the same needs as a 5-year-old who wants to switch it on by themselves.
| Child's age | Recommended type of panda night light | Key features |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 6 months | Fixed model on a bedside table | Warm light, lowest brightness, white noise |
| 6 to 18 months | Soft silicone model to place on the floor | Drop-resistant, wipe-clean surface |
| 18 months to 3 years | Portable touch model | Tap to switch on, long battery life |
| 3 to 6 years | Model with timer and several colours | Independence, bedtime routine |
| 6 years and over | Decorative panda lamp or 3D night light | Looks, extra reading light |
For very young children, always choose a model with no small detachable parts and no cable during use. From 3 years old, children can start switching it on and off themselves, which makes it a great way to build their independence at bedtime.
Where you place the night light and how you set it have a direct impact on sleep quality. A panda lamp in the wrong spot can shine too directly on your child's face and delay sleep — the opposite of what you want.
On models with adjustable brightness, the three-phase rule works particularly well: full brightness during the 10 to 15-minute bedtime routine, medium brightness for the 20 to 30 minutes it takes to fall asleep, then lowest brightness or gradual fade-out for the rest of the night. Many models now include this automatic dimming over 30 to 60 minutes.
A well-maintained night light easily lasts 5 to 8 years — the whole time your child really needs one. A few simple habits help keep the panda looking good and the battery in good health.
| Care task | How often | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning the shell | Every fortnight | Slightly damp microfibre cloth, no detergent |
| Charging the battery | Before it runs flat | Ideally between 20 and 80% to preserve charge cycles |
| Checking the USB port | Every 3 months | Blow gently to remove dust |
| Storage when not in use | Long holidays | Charge to 50% before storing away from heat |
The lithium-ion batteries used in rechargeable night lights keep around 80% of their original capacity after 500 full charge cycles, or roughly 3 to 4 years of daily use. A noticeable drop in battery life after that is normal and doesn't mean the product is faulty.
The panda is one of the three most popular animals for children's night lights, alongside the bunny and the dinosaur. The choice between them is often an emotional one, but a few practical differences are worth knowing.
If your child doesn't have a clear favourite yet, the panda is a safe bet: its neutral colours suit any bedroom style, and its association with gentleness is universal across cultures.
